I have had the pleasure of working with James Hampton, the executive director of Drills and Skills, both at City Year, also a youth empowerment organization, and through his grassroots non-profit program. On a side note, when James says non-profit, he truly means it! Not a penny of the money goes into his pocket. 100% of the funds are used for the program!

After graduating from City Year, I wanted to continue working with youth but in an organization that focused more on the social-emotional element of a youths' lives because kids aren't going to feel like studying until they feel good about themselves and understand that they matter. Therefore, I started volunteering for the Drills and Skills program as a mentor and tutor at Pacific Middle School. From the deepest most sincere parts of my heart, this program has UNBELIEVABLE success in positively shaping children's views of themselves and their futures.

It focuses not only on academic tutoring and athletic prowess, but on the integral social-emotional development of youth. What does that mean? Through a combination of external speakers, basketball drills, and plenty of love , James Hampton teaches the kids the concepts of showing anger in healthy ways, figuring out conflicts peacefully, waiting patiently, learning self-discipline and focus, and becoming confident leaders . I couldn't believe after a few months of the program how much the kids had changed!

I called James a few weeks ago to ask him how he was doing and I accidentally interrupted his program! In typical loving James Hampton style he still picked up and instead put one of the kids I used to tutor on the phone. She told me how she was getting straight A's this year, practicing basketball really hard so she could try out for the high school team, and feeling extremely happy! I almost cried because I knew how different she was when she had started the program. This is the transformative power that almost every youth in the program goes through. They are unrecognizable after a year of working with James.

This program needs money to keep reaching kids. I would trust that James could empower a banana into peeling itself! He can change any child's outlook on themselves including the toughest, roughest, most gang-affiliated youth!
