The Drills and skills program has served youth in the Seattle King County area for the past 20 years, impacting youth like Aaron Brooks, Jamal Crawford and Doug Christy. Its mission is to empower middle and high school aged youth to become successful citizens by providing a safe, nurturing environment where they will develop their academic, social and leadership skills. Our vision is that every student participating in the program will gain the skills needed to become successful in school and in life.By leveraging schools resources, partnering with community based organizations, and engaging volunteers in our service, we bring true meaning to the proverb “it takes a village to raise a child.” Each day begins with an hour-long tutoring and homework help session.Next, the participants engage in structured activities, consisting of workshops, guest speakers and discussions on current issues. The purpose of these activities is to develop their intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. The final session of the day allows the participants to develop their physical abilities as well as their leadership skills. We use enriching activities such as basketball to help these young adults model what they learned in the previous sessions. The Drills and Skills program provides real life experiences that equip young adults with the necessary tools to become leaders for life.
